A mother is a combination of love and sacrifice. I love being a mom! It’s what I aspired to be my whole life. I guess you could say it’s my dream job. I am truly blessed to have an amazing mom who is the perfect combination of these. She taught me so much about love and sacrifice through motherhood. It goes against our nature as women and moms, however, to take care of ourselves first. We are typically caregivers at heart which means most often our needs and desires are put on the back burner because our families come first. The old saying, “If Mama’s not happy, nobody’s happy.” is true, but ladies, it’s up to us to do our part to ensure that happiness. Here are 3 simple parts of my daily routine that I do for myself. I hope they’ll help you too.
In the morning, before the busyness of the day begins, take time to just be still with meditation and silence. In the quiet, focus on the great parts of your life and allow time to prepare yourself for the day. I grab a cup of coffee, have my quiet time, count my blessings then try to read an inspirational book before I start rushing through my morning. This allows me to start my day in a positive mood.
Take time at some point during your day to move. Your body will benefit from even a 30-minute brisk walk. I love to spend a few minutes working out with my husband each day because it gives us a chance to connect while doing something we both enjoy.
Eating healthy foods such as nutrient-dense vegetables like dark, leafy greens; lean meats; and fish that are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids will not only help you maintain a healthy weight, these foods are great for heart health, skin health, and help with hormone levels, sleep patterns, and regulating emotions.
What we allow to grow in our minds will affect us outwardly. Positive thinking is a key part of effective stress management. Positive thinking doesn’t mean burying your head in the sand and ignoring life’s stressful situations. It just means you take a more positive and productive approach to dealing with the unpleasant things in life. It’s unclear why people who think more positively experience health benefits such as increased life span, lower depression rates, greater immune systems, and better overall psychological and physical well-being. One theory is that having a positive outlook enables you to cope with stressful situations better, thus reducing the harmful effects of stress on your body.
This may be the most difficult of the three. It’s sometimes necessary for me to make a conscious effort in turning negative self-talk around. Doing this will make a huge difference in your stress level and if you are reading this, you know that stress management is of vital importance during the menopause years. Even if you are pessimistic, no worries - you can learn positive thinking skills.
